Sivanath Sastri College Library: A Heritage


As an extended part of the nineteenth century Brahmo educational movement, Sivanath Sastri College strives to provide quality education to Women. The Library of the college grew out of the great heritage and lives upto the ideal set forth in the teachings of the great pioneer of women’s emancipation – Pandit Sivanath Sastri. Hard pressed for space the library works against all odds to see young minds bloom, to assist in igniting flames of knowledge, it grows to help the community to grow.

Library collection:

At present the college library has more than 39000 books as per Accession Registrar. The Central Library has a collection of 19226 books and the Seminar Library has 20249 books. Out of the total stock 27435 have been recorded in the database.

Reference collection:

There is a collection of conventional reference books like Dictionary, Encyclopaedia, Gazeteer, Census report etc. Reference books can be consulted in the reading room only.

Gift Collection:

There is a small collection of books donated to the library by users and well wishers at different times. The gift collection is named “Prafulla Chandra Roy Text Book Library”.

Special Collection:

There is a special collection of books on and by the Brahmo Samaj.

Library hours:

Working days – All week days except gazetted holidays.

Working hours

  • Monday to Friday-6.15 a.m. to 11.30 a.m

  • Saturday-6.15 a.m. to 9.30 am.

Borrowing privileges to the user

All categories of users are entitled to borrow books from the library. Teachers and Honours students can borrow books both from the Central Library and Honours Seminar Library. The non-teaching staff and the students of general course can borrow books only from the Central Library. All categories of users are to pay over due charges for late return of books.
